Psychiatric assessment is useful to determine if there is a medical explanation, and possibly a medical solution, to a child's problem. Children and young people who are worried, upset, having unhelpful thoughts or behaving in a way that causes them harm may be helped by a psychiatric assessment.
Please contact the practice to discuss your needs, as in certain circumstances a psychiatric assessment is not required.
Most health insurers require a psychiatric assessment before starting an intervention or a course of therapy.
We have many years of experience in assessing children and families. Children will usually be seen with their parents, but for older adolescents time on their own with the psychiatrist may be helpful.
We can offer appointments between 9am and 6pm on late opening nights. An inital meeting for a psychiatric assessment may be quite lengthy, you should allow 2 hours. If you need reviews by a psychiatrist, these are normally much shorter.
Psychiatric reviews can only be carried out by a qualified psychiatrist. Click here for details of our staff.
