Consultation can also be very effective as a way of helping and supporting specific groups and networks. For instance, foster carers with very challenging children, and the cgild’s professional network including school, home, social workers, CAFCASS officers etc.
Consultation
Ongoing consultation is one of the best models of training as it allows the development of a protected space to thinking, to develop sound frameworks for thinking about casework problems or specific problem issues at the level of patient/client, agency, network or service.
A dedicated consultant may be engaged with a team following a client tragedy or an agency disaster or may be helpful in supporting and developing teamwork in contexts that have recurring human problems (road traffic accidents for emergency service workers; infant deaths and illness in Special Care Baby Units; post traumatic stress disorder in conflict workers e.g. prisons).
We hold regular Training Seminars at the Ashwood Centre:
Every other month for GPs (topics have included management of self-harming; trauma; family therapy for behavioural issues; stress and burn-out)Quarterly Medico-Legal Forum with Expert Witness specialists and LawyersQuarterly Contact and Mediation Forum for Lawyers, clinicians and CAFCASS officers and managers.School visits for Inset day training with Psychologists and therapists, including skills and theoretical approach to behavioural difficulties in the classroom.
